The Image of The Scientist In Cartoons Series And In Children Minds: Between Stereotypes And Motivation.

תקציר העבודה

Research as shown that television is a powerful tool that can shape the mind of the watcher according to the messages it derives. More over as kids are watching television and there sense of criticism is not fully developed the shows and scenes they are watching are interpreted as the actual truth and reality. This phenomenon emerged our research question what is the image of the scientist that children see in the cartoon series they are watching? Previous research (Rubin and Bar, 2013) as shown that the image of scientist of children aged 8-16 is a stereotypical image. The research tool was a qualitative analysis of 27 episodes (9 of each) of 3 popular cartoons in Israel: The power puff girls, Dexter laboratory and The Moomins. 2 researchers watched each episode separately and completed a form which focused on 3 major aspects of the scientist: his professional work, his personal life and his character and physical look. The study shows that in all three series the scientist image is stereotypic and confuses between science and technology. The scientist is a nerd male who wears glasses. He is an inventor who works alone inventing new technologies. He is a genius who achieves a new achievement in a short time. The scientist is portrayed as a good man who wants to improve humans' life. This image is very similar to the image of scientist as discovered in DAST (draw a scientist test). Conclusions and implications to science education of cartoons image of scientist will be discussed.
