What More Can We Learn with SSA: Identifying Overt and Covert Motives for Joining a PTA

תקציר העבודה


The study examined the perceptions of parental involvement among 320 Arab-Background & Subject: A parent-teacher association (PTA) or parent-teacher-student association (PTSA) is a formal organization composed of parents, teachers, and staff, which is intended to facilitate parents' involvement in school matters. Hence, volunteering to the PTA is one of many actions that are considered an indication of parental involvement. Few if any studies have dealt with parents' overt and covert motives for joining the PTA. Purpose / Hypotheses: The main purpose was to discover what Israeli parents report as their motives for joining a PTA. The second purpose was to tease out the covert motives, in addition to the overt ones reported. Method / procedure: The research instrument was an anonymous self-report questionnaire, containing 37 items. Data were collected from a sample of 155 Israeli parents. The initial data processing stage involved Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) using SPSS software. The second stage consisted of a Smallest Space Analysis (SSA), using the Hebrew University Data Analysis Program (HUDAP). Results: EFA revealed three main factors. Internal consistency of the scale was measured using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the scores in the whole scale was .89. Data deployment on the SSA map exhibited both a polarized form (an angular form) and a radial form in a Radex configuration. The first layer (the polarized facet) is composed of three major motives, relating to Self-serving altruistic values (SSAV), self-serving pedagogical altruism (SSPA), and egoistic motives (EM). The second layer (the radial form) is composed of covert motives, overt motives, and politically correct motives.
