Democratic citizenship education refers to moral alongside cognitive characteristics. The responsibility for cultivating these democratic virtues is laid upon the educators who are asked to create and allow for democratic mode of associated living community. These roles are constantly challenged in present society where subject content goals and instrumental modes of skills are gaining more interests than social value oriented goals, thus tipping the scales in favor of cognitive characteristics. These intellectual skills acquirements alone could not influence the formation of social disposition, therefore could end up creating, using Dewey`s words: 'egoistic specialists', who lack the moral and democratic virtues needed for genuine social life. This book stresses the pedagogical task of education in this regard, and offers to pay more attention to its duties as moral social-agent. In this book, research activities of members and affiliates of the Special Interest Group (SIG 13) Moral and Democratic Education of the European Association of Learning and Instruction (EARLI) are presented.
