About Achva

Our Mission

Achva Academic College, founded in 1971, is an active academic agent of growth and equality in Israel’s southern region, an area characterized as the least developed region in Israel in terms of socio-economic status and prevalence of acquiring higher education. Our hands-on curricula and programs break these geographical and cultural barriers as students and faculty from diverse backgrounds build together an inclusive community of dreamers, innovators, creators, and doers, who take part in solving the critical challenges of the region. Our cutting-edge academic excellence is driven by our mission to provide equal opportunities to diverse Israeli sectors and to promote excellent higher education in the socio-geographical periphery, as a means of enhancing social mobility and employment opportunities.

Our Students

Our 3,500 Bachelor and Master students represent a multicultural cross-section of Israeli society. We proudly serve a student body comprised of 37% Bedouin students from the Negev, 80% of whom come from the lowest socio-economic level in Israel (graded 1-2 on a 1-10 scale designed by Israel's Bureau of Statistics). More than 70% of our students are first-generation-to-academia from nearby small towns and villages (including third-generation Jews of Sephardic/Mizrachi decent) and an unprecedented 89% of our students are female (30% of whom begin their studies as mothers, and many more graduate as such). We take pride in our students' unique profile that reflects our commitment to an inclusive academic environment, including above-average representation of Bedouin, Ethiopian-origin, and Ultra-Orthodox students.

Academics

Achva Academic College offers a variety of degree tracks, including BA, MA, BSc, Bed, and MEd, taught by 500 lecturers. Students are offered a choice of over thirty majors and focus areas through three major Faculties:  Faculty of Science, Health and Sustainability, Faculty of Psychology and Liberal Arts and Faculty of Education and Leadership, including: Psychology, Life Sciences and Pre-Med (the first program to be approved in an Israeli college by the Council of Higher Education in August 2022), Information Systems, Communication Disorders, Applied Computer Science, Urban and Rural Sustainability, Special Education, Early Childhood, Mathematics Teaching, and English Teaching. In addition to academic studies, the college offers certificate studies and continuing education, as well as studies in preparatory schools for completion of a high school diploma for young people, hoping for a second chance to pursue higher education. Experiential and real-life learning are embedded in every field of study at Achva, giving the opportunity for real-world labor market experience and the creation and execution of innovative ideas, both on and off campus.

Our Campus

Achva Academic College, by its core characteristics and geographical location, encourages an open-minded spirit. The physical infrastructure of the college includes advanced study facilities and labs, as well innovative learning centers. The interplay between Achva and its vicinity is multifaceted, as our students become agents of change in their home communities, using their newly acquired skills through varied Practicum, thereby bettering their own fate, and the future of the southern region as a whole.
The campus is also a home for our newly inaugurated "Innovation and Creativity Hub" that attracts local and national entrepreneurs determined to realize their own potential. Aspiring to better society more globally, our educational reach exceeds traditional boundaries, and our students participate in international joint courses, some of which are aimed at assisting capacity building in developing countries.

Accessibility

One of the stated goals of Achva Academic College is to provide accessibility to students with disabilities and special needs. Accordingly, all buildings on campus were carefully designed and equipped with accessibility in mind. All classrooms are equipped with aids for the hearing and sight impaired, and our “Center for Innovative Educational Technology” serves as a learning and assistance hub for students with disabilities and special needs, ensuring that all Achva students are offered an equal opportunity to succeed.
